Happy days
The author is a rare find! Writer, Soldier and humourist! Hartley is living proof that the contents of a diary can be so profound! And funny! Some of the chapters can only be understood to understand the finer points when some turd is shooting at you!

Definitely my book of the year!
I don't know what to do now - downgrade all the 5 stars I have given so far or introduce a 6 stars category. :D It is the best book I have read this year. Brilliantly written - if you are into conflicts or military books or reading just for fun...you will find EVERYTHING in this book. Great stories, funny stories, deep even philosophical thoughts, interesting observations about military life, high school life or cultutal clash. It is exceptionally well written. You won't put it down until you reach the last page.

Unique and brilliant
Quite the most erudite and intellectual book I have ever read by a soldier in combat. His command of language and power of observation is of the highest order. If it had been decided to send an intellectual into a war zone disguised as a soldier the result could have been no better. I hope and believe that we have not heard the last of this unique young man.
