Product Description

This book is the antidote to the rather wholesome, oh-so-serious and often smug range of pregnancy literature currently on offer. It's a story for women everywhere who have been, are or want to be pregnant. Mel Giedroyc, from Mel and Sue, has based the book on her own experiences of pregnancy and birth and the dramas which ensue, and it covers everything from the usual morning sickness, food cravings and getting a seat on the bus, to the not-so-usual talking in Latin to the foetus through a shower attachment and falling in love with the Epidural anaesthetist. It's a witty and insightful narrative of events leading up to the birth of a first baby through the eyes of an excited, shambolic and slightly at sea, thirty-something who pens the trials and tribulations of her journey to motherhood.

Customer Reviews

Didn't raise even a smile1
I'm pregnant with my second child, and read the great reviews here. I wanted something that sympathised and revelled in the ghastliness of pregnancy. But you don't get any of that here - a couple of fat jokes, but most of it is the author's presentation of her wacky friends and NCT acquaintances - who are not very funny caricatures. I have to say, even mumsnet threads are quite a bit wittier and quite a lot funnier.

I can't believe how highly this was rated...1
Perhaps because I've never been pregnant, I didn't really find much to amuse me in this book - Giedroyc's comedy partner, Sue Perkins, I find is more witty and I wasn't entirely sure whether this book was fictionalised or not - given the story about her haircut on the inside, either story is made up, or the pictures on the cover have been faked ... little things like that annoy me...

I'm actually surprised that Mel has any friends, given what she writes in the book about one of them ...I don't really like bitchiness for the sake of it, either.

If I had a pregnant friend, I might pass this on to them - I'm sure junior would like it to teeth on, or something!

A book to make you laugh!5
This book had me laughing and cringing all the way through, and when I had to put it down all I wanted to do was to pick it up again. I would recommend this book if you are pregnant or not, as it is a fun read.
I loved this book right from the beginning. It has quite short chapters as Mel takes us throughout the weeks up to the birth, talking about how she was feeling and what she was thinking.
This is definitely a must have book for your book collection!
