36-year-old Sophie Stanton has lost her young husband to cancer. In an age where women are expected to be high-achievers, Sophie desperately wants to be a good widow - a graceful, composed Jackie Kennedy kind of widow. Alas, Sophie is more of a Jack Daniels kind. Guzzling cartons of ice-cream for breakfast, breaking down in the frozen food aisle of her local supermarket, showing up to work in her bathrobe and bunny slippers - soon she's not only lost her husband, but her job and her waistline. With nowhere to go but up, Sophie leaves California for Oregon and after several false starts opens her own fabulous bakery. Juggling the success of the bakery, her friends and her new life, Sophie proves that with enough humour and chutzpah it is possible to have life after loss. And falling in love again is all she needs...

A truly scrumptious treat!
Lolly Winston has written a fantastic debut with this novel. The way she describes things in the book is stunning. You can taste the frosting on the cakes, feel the material of the clothes and smell that just baked aroma from the bakery. The lead character's husband has just died and she has to re-build her life from scratch with a little help from her friends and family. Not everything goes smoothly, she loses her job and moves away to start a new life. Meeting a troublesome teenager, getting a new job and eventually opening her own bakery.
The book moves along at just the right pace, i felt sad to have reached the last page.
An absolute fantastic read!
I picked this book up from a charity store - apologies to the author for the lack of royalties there! But what a fantastic read! Having not long ago experienced a death in the family Lolly was spot on as to how Sophie was feeling and yes, I too have gone out in my slippers and bathrobe! Fantastic read and I'm about to order her other book. Fully recommend it.
