Product Description

The story begins with a mysterious egg washed up on a Scottish beach, the morning after a great storm. Kirstie and her brother Angus find the egg and take it home. The next day it has hatched into a tiny greeny-grey creature with a horse's head, warty skin, four flippers and a crocodile's tail. The baby sea monster soon becomes the family pet – but the trouble is, it just doesn't stop growing!

Customer Reviews

An enchanting yet believable story for junior readers about the Loch Ness Monster and the children who were friends with it 5
Dick King Smith has a reputation for good books about animals, and although the Water Horse is a fantastical creature, the story is richly realistic in tone. In this well written short paperback for confident readers, this is the story of the Loch Ness monster from its hatching fom a giant Mermaid's purse and through it's early life with two children and Grandad Grumble. They care for the friendly little monster as it grows from a kitten-sized creature with a face resembling a horse into a considerably bigger beastie which needs a secret midnight transfer to an appropriate loch.
It is a simple story yet both exciting and moving enough to engage and enthrall 5-9s, with a couple of dozen black and white illustrations to spark their imaginations. Now my children can't wait to see the film......
If you enjoyed the natural history and down-to-earth feel of this book, you might also like to try the shorter Morpurgo titles for the same age group e.g. The Dancing Bear and Tom's Sausage Lion.
