A Christmas Classic
Any child (or parent) of the 1980s will be familiar with the fantastic animation of Raymond Briggs' Snowman film, with its haunting soundtrack. The book is no less striking, as the beautiful story enthralls children and adults alike. The wonderfully stylised illustrations are faithful to the film, yet no less evocative to those who haven't seen it. Why not introduce this masterpiece to a new generation of readers?
Lovely book but not the same as the film
A fantastic classic, we bought this as our 2 year old is hooked on the film. I was a little disappointed to realise that a chunk of the film (where the boy goes to the snowman party and meets father christmas) is not in the book!
This doesn't detract from the lovely simplicity of the book, but my 2 year old doesn't quite get why they are different!
This charming story in a nutshell - utterly beautiful.
First of all, I love this series for my Son who is an unwilling but emerging reader. It is really motivating, especially the Disney Pixar Cars and Thomas The Tank Engine titles, and great for introducing the concept of books - each book states simply "what the book is about" which you can teach the child to read the text, and how to find their way around any book. Excellent design.
I was so delighted to find this title, I always have my eye on this series. I recommend the Toy Story title "Me Too Woody!" (Level 1) which is a story about Woody and Buzz playing, and initially, not letting Jessie join in so apart from the fun of it, its a good social story if you like.
I agree with the other reviewer that missing out the snowman party with Father Christmas is definitely one of the highlights of the original and it is odd - instead they substituted a wordless double page spread picture of the Snowman and James flying (Walking in the air bit) which I have to admit, is beautiful. So that doesn't necessarily detract in my view, because you can use that gap when reading to your child, you can say "just a minute - they missed a bit didn't they? What bit? Then get them to describe it, and perhaps draw it, and insert it in the book. Or print a still of it from the internet and let the child tell you what the words should be.
I love to find parents in the UK buying these books, I am so enthusiastic about them, they are the best thing I ever discovered! And extremely reasonable. I used to make a lot of my son's favourite titles from capturing images from DVDs and putting them into powerpoint, but this takes some of the workload off me.
Happy Christmas Snowmen Lovers and to your kids!
