‘We must kidnap some children,’ announced Aunt Etta. ‘Young, strong ones. It will be dangerous, but it must be done.’
Three children are stolen and taken to a bizarre island, which is home to some extraordinary creatures – including mermaids, selkies and the legendary kraken. The island is the base for a very mysterious mission. But the magical adventure is cut short, when the island is suddenly under siege. Can they save themselves and their new friends?

Customer Reviews
A quick but excellent read
An easy book to read with good characters and some funny bits. 3 Aunts called Etta, Coral and Myrtle have a mission to kidnap 3 children of a certain type so that they have help with their work ( which is a very strange task)unfortunately Myrtle kidnaps the wrong type, a snobby and selfish lad called Lambert. Lamberts dad finally finds out that the children have not just vanished off the face of the earth but are on a secret island. He goes to get Lambert back but with strange and funny consequences. A good fun read which is very suitable for 9 - 11 year olds.
Brilliantly written with realistic characters
Strong worded, mysterious, and packed with hilarity, Monster Mission is Eva Ibbotson's seventh success. On a secret island, Aunts Etta, Coral, and Myrtle are planning a crime. They are too old to continue their mission, so they need help in the form of... young, strong children.
Fabio and Minette are unhappy with their present lives. When three Aunts from an agency turn up to take Minette to her father and Fabio to school, they don't know how much their lives will change... But Myrtle makes a mistake, accidently kidnapping Lambert, the spoilt son of mean, rich Henry Sprott, unkowingly putting the whole mission in danger.
When Fabio and Minette wake up on the island, unharmed in a room with an unlocked door and go downstairs to be served breakfast by an escaped convict in an apron, they know this is no ordinary kidnapping.
Ibbotson's splendid fantasy takes an ecological turn
This was the first Ibbotson we read as a family, and though not quite as marvellous as The Secret of Platform 13, Dial a Ghost and Journey to the River Sea it still got us hooked. The Kraken is an especially satisfying monster, and the jokes about the horrid child's mobile phone very good.
