Fantastic read
A great read with well rounded characters and storylines. I loved the way the author was able to flit between time periods without losing any sense of Grace herself. Definitely one to buy, especially the ending with both its big and little twists.
A rambling unsurprising read
I struggled to get through this book, particularly as just about every event was telegraphed well in advance removing all sense of suspense. Even the climax of the story was quite anti-climatic and predictable.
The idea of the story being told through audio tapes to a long lost grandson (I think) was also very contrived, with very mentioniable (even by today's senior citizens) unmentionable secrets gradually being revealed. It is difficult to see who this book is aimed at. The more I read, the more convinced I became that it definitely deserves to reside in the Mills and Boon stable. The marketing men did a good job on the cover.
The only redeeeming feature of the book was the interpretation of the eventual death of the main character, which was sensitive and believable, although the end of the book seemed quite rushed with a number of loose ends left untied.
Every Page Was Worth It
Period drama is not usually my thing! I decided to read the book as I was looking through a booklet that listed Richard & Judy 'reads' and also shortlists for book awards, and this was one of the books listed.
I have to say I was very surprised and delighted that I took to it so soon after reading the first page.I became very interested in the period and lifestyle of the times simply because the writing was so good and full of detail.I am not sure when I may read a period drama again, but when I do, The House at Riverton will always remind me why I choose to read another one.
