Dr Anya Crichton, a pathologist and forensic physician, finds that work is sparse for the only female freelancer in the field. Between paying child support, a mortgage and struggling to get her business off the ground, Anya can't yet afford to fight her ex-husband for custody of their three-year-old son, Ben.
When Anya is asked to look into the seemingly innocent suicide of a teenager, Anya notices similarities between the girl's death and several other cases she is working on with her friend and colleague, Detective Sergeant Kate Farrer. All the victims went missing for a period of time, only to be found dead of apparent suicide in most unusual circumstances.
As Anya delves deeper, the pathological findings point to the frightening possibility that the deaths are not only linked, but part of a sinister plot. Nothing can prepare her for the terrifying truth...

Solid thriller in the Gerritsen mould
Fans of Tess Gerritsen, Kathy Reichs, Patricia Cornwell and Karin Slaughter have a new physician to befriend. Malicious Intent follows Dr Anya Crichton as she investigates a series of apparently unlinked deaths in which the female victims were found to have an unknown fibre in their lungs.
Kathryn Fox has created a likeable character in Crichton. In some ways she faces the same problem as the aforementioned authors: how to plausibly have a doctor carrying out investigations that the police would be expected to deal with. Fox handles the problem well in this case, but it remains to be seen if she can do so over a series of novels, surely an inevitability with the character she has given life to. The prose is well written and the story well told, albeit at a slightly greater length than necessary. Fox cranks up the tension well as the tale reaches its denouement.
This is a good thriller, let down a little by the dearth of plausible suspects, which may lead the seasoned crime reader to work out 'whodunit', if not how. The medical detail is fascinating and meticulously researched. It's well worth reading if you like any of the authors mentioned above. Not quite up to the standards of the all-conquering Tess Gerritsen, but still a very good book.
Entertaining and enjoyable. Promising Start.
I bought this book on the basis that the sell line was fans of patricia cornwell will love this book. Well, love may be a strong word. I found the story engaging and the main character believable. The content was accurate in terms of crime investigation, psychology and pathophysiology. The sociological setting was also very interesting. The actual culprit was less believable. There could have been more red herrings and more likely alternative perpetrators. That said, it was a book I wanted to read, enjoyed immensely and found extremely entertaining. I will read more kathryn fox.
Finally someone who gives Cornwell a run for her money
A fantastic new character who is as likeable as Scarpetta, though maybe not as tough. I'm always on the look out for new authors and will definitely be following her work.
The book for the most part manages to avoid typical crime cliches, which is very refreshing for anyone who reads alot of this genre.
An interesting plot with good scientific detail.
