Customer Reviews
If you love rugby, read it
A great read for anyone who loves rugby. The story comes across as a honest, down to earth account of a career which almost never ended! I particularly enjoyed the frank account of both world cups and applaud the honest and constructive way in which events were portrayed. You can feel the atmosphere in the words and IMHO the press really created a storm in a teacup. Ashton is obviously highly regarded by Catt. Even my wife read it...
Lacks the flair of the player
This book did not excite me the way the man on the field used to do so often. I followed Mike Catt's career from the very early days and became a huge fan - despite the often unfair criticism he received from journalists and commentators. His record speaks for itself - and that's what you get here. The book comes over as a series of happenings and lists of events and matches. This is inevitable in a way but the problem is largely cancelled out by the moving descriptions of the time surrounding the difficult birth of his daughter - and not least, the revealing story about his relationship with Brian Ashton and its survival of the near-terminal problems that England found in the 2007 World Cup.
It's a good read for all those who look for flair and loyalty on the field - I just wish it had been written with a bit more dynamism.
