Synopsis
Making their way beneath the Antarctic ice toward the center of the world, a team of specialists traverses rocks, caverns, and underground rivers in darkness, not knowing the incredible wonders--and terrors beyond imagination--that lie ahead.

From the Author
Two miles under Antarctica, adventures awaits . . .
Who isn't afraid of being lost in perpetual darkness, where your next step could kill or maim you? Where behind you something tracks you by the scent of your own fear? You can hear it breathing, hear the scrape of its claws. What do you do?

In my first novel, SUBTERRANEAN, I sought to merge my background in evolutionary biology and my interest in cave exploration to create a world hidden deep under Antarctic ice . . . to take you to a cavernous land that has never been seen before, where wonders and horrors are around every corner, and each step could be your last . . . and where awaits a mystery older than man.

So grab a hand lantern, check the batteries, and come on down . . . to the world beneath the world. The adventure awaits!

Customer Reviews

Loved it!!5
I read Map of Bones and Black Order first and absolutly loved Rollins' writing style. So I decided to read his earlier books also, and I wasn't disappointed. His writing style is wonderful, it's fast paced and really exciting. His has the idea of suspense perfected! I couldn't put this book down, and loved every second of reading it. I've already got a couple more of his books ordered and intend on getting the whole collection!

Good sci-fi, but not his best3
I have read alot of the Sigma force adventures and am now reading Rollin's earlier escapades. Subterranean was more sci-fi than adventure and is like an ice-age Jurassic park under Antarctica. A little too far fetched but a good adventure with some strong characters (Ashley, son, and Ben), a stereotyped Arabian terrorist, and lots of strange pre-evolutionary monsters. A nice tie-in with the Aboriginees makes an interesting hypothesis. Overall OK, perhaps a little too repetitive with many similar monster battles, and may be benefited by editing down almost 80 pages.

Good But Not Great3

James Rollins was born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1961. He graduated with a doctorate in veterinary medicine from the University of Missouri and went on to establish his own veterinary practice in Sacramento, California. His books are adventure books in the true sense of the word and one can understand why as he is himself an amateur spelunker and scuba diver.

I have read all of the author's books and found them enjoyable and pure escapism. So I was surprised to see this one and realise that it was one that I had do read. The book itself describes the storyline as a Journey To The Bottom of The Earth, to a place you never dreamed existed.

It is about a team of hand picked specialists, who are making their way beneath the ice towards the centre of the world. It is more of a fantasy than most of James Rollins books and I cannot say that I enjoyed it as much as say Black Order, or Map of Bones. However, the author certainly knows how to excite his reader and keep the storyline rattling along at a fair old pace. I am sure that anyone who likes James Rollins books will like this one too.
