SdS showing us how it's done (again!)
This was the first book of de Shazer's that I read having seen videos of the man in action and coming accross reference after reference. This book encouraged me to pick up others of his.

It's kind of a book of two halves, the first about language and construction, the second offers transcripts and notes from cases for the reader's perusal. I found the first stretched me and, although complex, I found it rewarding. The second half has influenced my work with substance users greatly. Stunning in it's simplicity, it shows how to engage clients, focus them on the future and help them to work on the things that they see as most important. de Shazer makes no assumptions, keeping things beautifully relevant to the client's goals, not imposing his view or rules on to the client.

If you're starting out in Solution Focused Therapy I'd recommend something more basic like Problem to Solution by George et al, but if you've had a taster and liked it check this out and witness one of the originators of SFT in action.
