Synopsis
Who are the new philanthropists? And how is their philanthropy 'new'? In this remarkable and inspiring book, the eminent management writer Charles Handy and his wife Elizabeth, a portrait photographer, have collaborated to portray a new generation of practical philanthropists, men and women who have made their own fortunes and decided to move on from financial success to try to help those in need. They are doing so not simply by giving their money away to charities and agencies but by helping actively, working on the spot with the very people who need their aid, ensuring that the initiatives are sustainable in the longer term. As in their acclaimed "The New Alchemists", the Handys have both interviewed and photographed their subjects in order to tell their inspiring stories; from the Sydney restaurateur Jeff Gambin, who personally helps to cook hot and cold menus for homeless people; to Niall Mellon, a young Irish property developer who is replacing the shacks with breeze-block homes in a South African township; and Sara Davenport, who sold her art gallery and set up the breast-cancer care centre the Haven Trust to offer integrated and holistic treatment and support.

This striking book of words and photographs reveals the energy and inspiration of these new ways of using wealth, revealing the motivations and satisfactions of such direct action.

Customer Reviews

Philanthropy Begins at Heart5
I am very lucky to have read a review about this book in one of the magazines and followed by which I bought a copy of the book and just finished reading it. Undoubtedly this is a very fabulous book, inspires you from cover to cover with many enlightening stories of new generation of self-made philanthropists. The illustrious management writer Charles Handy and his wife Elizabeth (pictures), through this book have done an excellent job by portraying a new breed of highly effective, practical and good human beings (men and women) who apart from making their own fortunes have dedicated their life to the wellbeing of others who are in need. Every single profile (about 23 of them) documented in this book are very inspirational and motivational and makes you believe in God. This is a must read book for any one has the wisdom and heart to care for the others. I am sure this book will motivate many such self-made philanthropists to emerge. A great book in total.

Most inspiring book I read this year5
If you only had to read one book this year, I would highly recommend you'd choose Charles Handy "The New Philanthropists" . Not only because the compilation of portraits chosen amongst today's most generous philanthropists makes most inspiring and uplifting reading, but in addition I certainly learned a thing or two about why these entrepreneurs became so successful that they can now afford to devote part (or in some cases, the bulk) of their fortune to philanthropical activities.

Written in an entertaining manner, each of the philanthropists' portrayal by Handy is accompanied by a most artistic portrait of each subject shot by Handy's wife, talented photographer Elizabeth Handy.

I would suggest that if you're at a loss to choose a birthday present for anyone you know, this book will prove a most welcome gift. Indeed, The New Philanthropists is bound to leave anyone who reads it with a feeling of optimism about our collective future. This book needed to be written, if only to counteract the dire picture the majority of media paint of the world. I am extremely grateful to Charles Handy for this most enlightening work. I think you will be too if you decide to buy this most excellent book.
