Synopsis
This little fish has a very big imagination! Every day, Tiddler is late for school, and every day he has another tall take for his teacher. But did he really ride a seahorse? Did he really meet a mermaid? And who will believe him when he really does get captured in a net? Tiddler is a classic of the future, with a little hero that all children will identify with.
Customer Reviews
Tiddler's complicated!
I really wanted this effort from the Donaldson/Scheffler team to work with my preschool class, but sadly it was not to be. While the general rhyme-scheme is pleasing and there are a number of in-jokes (for instance, there is an unnamed species of fish featured which bears a remarkable resemblance to a Gruffalo) which can be shown to young readers, there are a couple of drawbacks:
Firstly, much of the plotline - about a tall-tale telling little fish named Tiddler - goes above preschool children's heads.
Secondly, the necessary interest in and awareness of different types of fish is/can be difficult to explain to youngsters - particularly those who do not live near the sea/ an aquarium...
Again, this means that it is a struggle to convey the story to children in an age group for which 'Monkey Puzzle', 'The Gruffalo' and 'A Squash and a Squeeze' - all of which have more general appeal - have been favourite stories.
Tiddler/the fish who cried wolf
A lovely story but please be careful as another book by the same authors called "the fish who cries wolf" is actually the same book with a different story. My daughter was very disappointed when handed a new book with a new cover but exactly the same inside.
A little book with a big imagination
This is a wonderful story with a relaxed rhyming text which is so easy and enjoyable to read to very young children. My children of 3 and 2 years absolutely adore this story and were delighted to spot "the Gruffalo fish" among the illustrations. At three years old, I had never heard of "sunfish", "butterfish" and "dab". If you are looking for fun, enjoyable (and educational) storytimes with your children, I really recommend this book.
