Synopsis
Packed with practical guidance and beautifully illustrated throughout, Graphic Design School provides a solid foundation for the design student as well as offering a back-to-basics tool for more advanced designers in search of solutions to graphic problems. The book is divided into three clear sections, beginning with 'The Language of Design', which introduces the basic design skills, giving encouragement and advice on thinking up ideas and expressing them visually. I n 'Principles and Techniques', the reader is shown how to start developing these ideas and learns new methods of giving form to their vision by experimentation with colour, typography and computer techniques. Finally, 'Commercial Practice' shows how these skills are applied in the workplace, whether in editorial design, advertising or in the creation of corporate identities. Throughout, the book highlights real examples of students' work, from the design of logos and websites to product packaging, providing points of reference so the reader can continually compare their own progress and enhance their potential in this competitive field.
Customer Reviews
A lot of waffle.
I did not get much from this book at all, it just seemed to waffle on about this, that and the other and didn't teach much at all. There didn't seem to be a lot of sense in the order material was covered, I did persevere to over 3/4 of the way through but just got fed up with there being little or no direction or explanation/advice.
I also bought The Non Designers Design Book by Robin Williams - it is way much better, well written, direct and explains things so you actually learn about graphic design.
I would NOT recommend this book at all - this is from a non-graphic designer so bare that in mind!
NOT VERY READABLE
While the content may be excellent I found the writing to be lacking. It was tough slogging through this book. The sentences tended to drag and the author doesn't write in a lively fashion.
I would occasionally see some useful information in my reading, but the pace was so slow and the textbook style wore me down.
Great book for graphic design students.
A teriffic book! Full colour, loads of pictures. And finally a book that actually gives you inspiration for ideas. WHAT YOU NEED MOST! Overall a great book that i am glad i brought. Would recommend to any graphic designer, particually degree students!
