Ex-soldier Sean Tyler wakes up in an unfamiliar room next to the headless corpse of a girl he's met recently. With his memory of the previous 24 hours wiped clean, he's hardly out of bed before the he notices a note next to the TV telling him to press play on the room's DVD machine. The film shows him stabbing someone to death. Tyler is confident that the footage is fake, but will a jury see things the same way? The man on the end of the phone tells him that if he wants the evidence to disappear, he must go to an address in east London, and await further instructions. Tyler knows he must do as he is told. He also knows that the phone caller has no intention of keeping him alive. To survive he must recover the missing 24 hours of his life and find out who's setting him up before his time runs out for good. The clock is ticking...

‘From the moment I open my eyes, I know it’s going to be a bad day. The room’s stifling hot; my head feels like a dwarf on speed’s dancing a jig on it, and the blood … Well, the blood’s everywhere.
It feels as if I’ve stepped into the middle of someone else’s nightmare.
But I’m wrong. This is my nightmare. And it’s only just beginning.’

About the Author
The research for Simon Kernick's novels is what makes them so authentic. His extensive list of contacts in the police force has been built up over more than a decade. It includes long serving officers in Special Branch, the National Crime Squad (now SOCA), and the Anti-Terrorist Branch, all of whom have plenty of tales to tell. He is in his thirties, lives near London and has two young children.

Severed
I've just finished reading this and I couldn't put it down, none stop action that never lets up. I would place Simon Kernick somewhere between Lee Child and Harlen Coban for the writing style. The story starts with Tyler waking up in bed with the headless corpse of his girl friend next to him with no idea of where he is or any of the events leading up to this and a tape is there waiting for him which shows that he is the one who killed her. This seems impossible to him because he had no reason to kill her and he was madly in love with her too. So begins a frantic race over the next twenty four hours to find out what's really going on,the words just fly off the page and you won't be able to read them fast enough as Tyler finds he has been set up for murder, from the first page to the last the tale moves with the momentum of a runaway train with thrills and plenty of violence along the way. With not one wasted word and chapters that blend seamlessly into each other this book is a pure adrenalin rush I totally loved it and would recommend it to any fan of thrillers. Great entertainment.
Faster Than The Speed Of Light!
I started reading this and from the very first page found it almost impossible to put down. The graphic descriptions mean it's not a book for everyone, but certainly if you like real-life gangster stories with plenty of twists and turns and a fast pace you will enjoy this book. Although the ending was fairly tame in comparison to the rest of the plot I felt it worked extremely well. I've just purchased two more of Simon Kernick's books and am hoping they're as good as this one.
Fast Paced
I can't believe so many people have given this book a low rating! This was the 1st Simon Kernick Book i read and it made me go and buy all the rest! This guy is some writer!
