Absolutely incredible
Not being a massive Take That fan the first time round, i have now been converted after this amazing and truthful biography. Gary Barlow comes across as the most genuinely lovely guy when you read this book, and you cannot help but laugh and cry at the happy and upsetting moments.
I took this to read on holiday and i finished it after 5 days and i was absolutely gutted when i finished it, it actually made me upset for the rest of the holiday!!
Great read, a must for any fan, a must even if you weren't a fan, just for the rollercoaster ride of a guy who just wanted his music appreciated.
The highs and lows of fame
This book has become all the more interesting since the comeback of Take That, and how refreshing that Gary has written about the difficult times with candour and doesn't shrink from self criticism either. Where as once Robbie Williams seemed like the winner in this story, now it seems Gary has the upper hand, with a more full and rounded life, professionally as well as personally, and who could begrudge him that after the years he was slagged off by a very 'childish' Robbie. All in all a fascinating and at times humorous read, that says a great deal about the 'celebrity' culture.
Intoxicated by Gary's magic!
I was too naive when Take That first were around I didn't really "get it". I was too busy listening to bands with less complex messages and reasons for being, like the New Kids on the Block and MC Hammer. However, a few years of Radiohead albums and Dostoevsky novels later, I finally 'got it' and realise the incredible talent I'd been missing. This music, it was intoxicating to me. However, my CD player broke! Heartbroken, I tried everything in my power to regain that initial beautiful feeling. Cocaine, heroin, toilet cleanser. Nothing had the same effect on me. Now, here I am, two years later with a new CD player and my life is looking up. I listen to "I want you back" every morning as I pray, mouthing along to the words but letting Jesus know beforehand that I'm singing it to him.
When I heard Gary'd written a book, I cynically assumed it was ghostwritten. However, once I read it and saw how streetwise and hip it was, unmistakeably this book is from the same genius who gave us "Oh Baby I love you (And don't you forget it, I will never regret it)" and "I know I'm a jerk (But look at my hair)".
Of course, as other reviews have noted, the best section is the 42 page chapter on Gary's handkerchiefs, but this book has a lot to offer even the odder elements of Gary's fanbase who are not also handerchief enthusiasts.
