Synopsis
'Creepers'. That's what they call themselves. Urban explorers who illegally enter sealed buildings - hotels, offices, department stores - many of which have been abandoned for years. Exploring one holds all the thrill of going into a time capsule. One night in New Jersey, a group of creepers enters the Paragon, a once-magnificent hotel designed and built by a reclusive millionaire. The structure which foreshadowed the beauties of Art Deco architecture is now decrepit, boarded up and marked for demolition. But the Paragon has a disturbing history and it soon becomes clear to the creepers that this decaying seven-story building holds more secrets than they could have imagined in their worst nightmares.
Customer Reviews
Excellent Suspense Filled Horror/ Thriller!
I must admit to being pulled to this book by the cover... A bit shameful I know as "you shouldn't judge a book by its cover" but I found I was right in picking this book as when I started reading it it ticked practically all my boxes for suspense and eery descriptions of the building and atmosphere. Although its not exactly a deep and meaningful book, but then its not meant to be, its fun, scary and just enough character involvement to make you feel hooked. As a big Richard Laymon fan, I have to say that I did draw parallels with his writings with this book and yes Laymon would do this more justice, but that aside its brilliant and well I recommend it for a bit of weekend or rainy day reading - superb! I can see this being made into a film, when you read the story it seems to cry out for a big budget hollywood movie script.
mixed feelings
I am a big fan of david morrell and enjoyed this book but dont think the writing is up to the standard of his other novels-if you have read the other reviews you will know the plot so i wont go into that here-the overall idea was good,i did like it but something was lacking-the writing was lazy in places and it was hard to care about characters being killed when you didnt know them very well!If you havent read morrell before then start with another-he is a great author!I think Richard Laymon does this sort of story better if you dont mind the gore!
More than a serviceable thriller
Ronseal like, it does just what it says on the tin. It's not too demanding, but it *is* entertaining and Morel certainly knows how to keep a plot moving, there are no obviously expendable characters and plenty of plot twists, all of which helps to keep the pages turning.
It was a little disconcerting to see that Morrel was responsible for bringing Rambo into the world, and if I'd seen that on the inside cover before I read the book, I would almost certainly not have read it. Don't let it put you off.
This was my first Morrel, I'll be reading more.
