Johan Eschbach, Professor of Environmental Science and semi-retired secret agent, and his lovely wife, the world-renowned singer Llsette, return for another adventure, this time in Russia, during the long "white nights" of the summer. Their world is an intriguing alternate present in which many things are changed. What we know as the eastern U.S. is the nation of Columbia, and Russia is still ruled by the Czars. Llysette is being sent by the Columbian government on a cultural exchange mission to St. Petersburg. Johan will, of course, accompany her, allowing him to work behind the scenes on the oil concession in Russian Alaska that Columbia so desperately needs. But even the oil shortage will fade to insignificance when Johan discovers what new weapons technology the Russian are developing, a threat even more fearsome than the atomic bombs of Austro-Hungary.

Not a fantasy novel
Not really one for Modesett's fantasy novels fans, but if you like alternative history like me you will enjoy this series. The first book was 'Ghost of the revelator' which is recommended to get the full background.
It's set in an alternative universe where Ghosts exist, resulting from sudden or violent deaths. And the effect on us is to reduce (but not end) wars and killing; basically people can't stand the horrors being constantly and eternally relived.
Modern society is consequently different. America is a more fractured country and basically based on conservative Dutch origins. The old European powers of Austra-Hungury, Russia etc are the world powers.
The catch is these are mere background to a pretty gripping thriller series. Certainly the ghosts play only a minor part.
These are very intellegent books and reward the determined reader with layers of interesting ideas.
Ghost of the White Nights by L.E.Modesitt Jnr
A new departure for "Modesitt" in an alternative history world where Columbia, Austria and Russia are among the prominant world countries (it is written as though there was a previous book in the series but I have never found it). Although there are some interesting ideas on Ghosts and an ability to turn people into Zombies, it does not have the compulsive 'difficult to be down' character of many of his books. As a strong L.E. Modesitt fan, I was a little dissapointed in this work.
