Customer Reviews
pretty, on the outside!
Nylon magazine has arguably the most original approach to beauty journalism. Instead of just telling us what makeup was going down the catwalks that season, it refers to figures of pop culture as inspiration - not just your standard Audrey Hepburn either, but more quirky options such as Anna Karina and even Prince. This book compiles a comprehensive list of beauty icons from the 20's to the present, alongside cult products, ten most evocative perfumes, iconic hairstyles and illustrated makeup looks, alongside millions of inspiring beauty editorials. Written in amusing, intriguing fashion, I regularly look to this book for beauty inspiration.
Don't expect too much...
This book didn't really go into the detail that I would expect from a magazine as famed and comprehensive as Nylon. I found it to be structured like a mini-guide for anyone trying to adopt an attractive image. It touches lightly on certain stars who personified the look of an era and discusses some hair and make-up styles/methods.
I guess I was hoping for a book that really explored *why* certain looks, universal or unique, were considered beautiful. I enjoyed the read, but unfortunately the book doesn't delve very far into its subject matter.
Nylon Book of Beauty
Interesting book for those interested in make-up. Has brilliant illustrations in the recommended products sections, as well as lengthy notes and details on film stars and style icons form the last century or so. Inspirational photography and clear, magazine-style layouts. Good for bookshelves or tables, a nice book to lend to friends and to give recommendations from. The perfume section is especially good, as well as the classic products. Definitely buy for a tenner or so!
