Editorial Reviews

From the Author
The most comprehensive and user friendly text on survival.
Wilderness Survival is a straightforward book that focuses on teaching the skills one should know before venturing into the great outdoors. Based on the same principles I taught--while a member of the USAF Survival Instructor Corp--the 182 page text covers the five essentials of survival: Personal Protection (clothing, shelter, and fire); Signaling (manmade and natural), Sustenance (water and food); Navigation (with and without a compass); and Health (psychological, environmental injuries, and traumatic injuries).

In addition to being a valuable resource for all backcountry travelers, Wilderness Survival is the working text for student of my Wilderness Adventure Programs (Simply Survival).

Some useful info, but by no means exhaustive3
This subject can really only be taught practically in the field when you're cold, wet and hungry, and such books as this can only ever be adjucts to learning these skills.

This book is not long enough to cover any subject thoroughly, is illustrated by pencil sketches and contains a few black and white photographs that do not complement the text well. This is an American book and subsequently spellings are all US variants.

The section on navigation did contain some useful practical tips such as 'aiming off' on linear features, improvising a compass from your watch and point-to-point nav.

I would have liked a distinct section on preparation for the field and a detailed explaination of how to put together a decent survival kit.

Some useful info, but Ray Mears' books and especially Lofty Wiseman's SAS survival guide are more extensive and better presented.

The best outdoor survival book on the market.5
Being an avid outdoorsman and mountaineer, I have read many books on wilderness survival. This book is superior to any others on the market. The book deals with survival in a logical manner covering all aspects, including mental conditioning. The illustrations provide an excellent visual representation of the words. This book is a must read for anyone who works or plays in the out of doors.

Outstanding5
I've read every survival book out there. It is refreshing to find one that is straightforward and easy to follow. Greg's book isn't filled with philosophy...it's full of valuable information that is useful for all backcountry travellers!!!!
