Text, text, text
A very informative book but would benefit from using lots more diagrams and pictures. Would still recommend on the basis of the amount of information that is crammed in.
camping and woodcraft
The latest aquistion to my outdoor refs, having found an old wartime copy recently. It contains some interesting snippets lost on this greedy gortex clad world. The items which do appear outdated add to the charm of the book. If it didnt have those bits it would be another piece of drivel written by some one who used his banking express card as a book mark, saw a tree in captivity once and never made or repaired a piece of his field equipment. Originally written at the end of over 100 years of pioneer activity in North America. Anyone who dabbles in the 21st century with Backwoodsman and native skills will find some useful primitive lifestyle ideas to try. Some great project ideas for youth leaders. Get those kids making primitive field gear and let them see it works is worth its weight in gold. Avoid the bee hunt that could prove too interesting lol. TY NESSMUK, A useful addition to my ref material. OK now you are interested go find a copy.
High impact camping at its best!
If you prefer a wall-tent, buckskins and an axe to goretex and gas stoves, this book is for you. Old time wood-skills by an experienced man, and a good writer. Some of the equipment detail is outdated (this book was originally written 70 years ago), but there is so much good stuff on everything from dressing and cooking game, to using an axe, to building camp furniture, compass work, marksmanship, and a whole lot more.
