about Vegan Freak: Being Vegan in a Non-Vegan World
All of us who are vegan have at some time or another just felt like absolute outsiders in the places that we're supposed to be the most comfortable our homes, our jobs, and with our friends and families. Though most vegans are likely not any "freakier" than your average person, the simple and compassionate act of denying animal products for ethical reasons can literally make you into the weirdo at the dinner table, or in other social and personal contexts." --from Chapter One
Curious about veganism? Want to be a vegan? Already a vegan? Just wondering how to be vegan without going insane? In this informative and practical guide on veganism, we help you love your inner vegan freak. Loaded with tips, advice, stories, and comprehensive lists of resources that no vegan should live without, this book is key to helping you thrive as a happy, healthy, and sane vegan in a decidedly non-vegan world.
we wrote this for you
Yeah, that sounds like trite marketing-speak, but we wrote this book because we want to help people go vegan and stay vegan. In the foreword, Isa Chandra Moskowitz (author of Vegan With A Vengeance and co-host of the Post Punk Kitchen) writes that Vegan Freak "...is a must-read for vegetarians who are on the fence and haven't taken the leap." This book is also the essential guide for anyone who's already vegan or contemplating veganism for ethical reasons.
serious, funny, irreverent
We're not afraid to tell it like it is when it comes to veganism. Sometimes, this means we're funny. Sometimes it means we're serious. And sometimes it means we're irreverent.
Nevertheless, there's plenty for everyone. In the book we detail:
* how to go vegan in 3 weeks or less using the "cold tofu" program;
* the arguments for ethical veganism, with an emphasis on animal liberation;
* how to get along with friends, family, and others, including other vegetarians
* tons of useful and practical tips for surviving the grocery store, restaurants, and dinners with omnivores;
* how to respond when people ask you if you "like, live on apples and twigs";
* how capitalism is implicated in animal and human oppression
vegan freak is resourceful
Besides the everyday stuff, there's also a wealth of information and resources in the book designed to make your vegan life as easy as possible. In an Appendix, we incldue huge lists of suggested reading, cookbooks, websites, and more. There's also a chapter on basic animal rights theory that'll help you argue your ethics from a logical standpoint. From here, you can easily move into more reading so that you can deepen your understanding of this important component of veganism.
Vegan Freak: Being Vegan in a Non-Vegan World is your guide to embracing vegan freakdom. Come on, get your freak on!

Customer Reviews
Amazing, informative and fun.
This book is a wonderful guide for new Vegans, or soon to be Vegans, but I also think it would be great for long time Vegans.
It's well written and informative.......although not a book for people wanting information on the actual diet, this deals more with how to BE Vegan.
I loved this book it was great to read and fun. I also now listen to the authors Podcast. There's a link on their website.
Thanks Bob and Jenna for this wonderful book.
Good opener
I've been a vegetarian for about 20 years and i have been rethinking the reasons why i became a vegy. As time has gone by i have realised that i am not the 17 year old angry activist willing to burn down the nearest slaughter house anymore. This book has re opened my eyes and re fueled the fire within, i am now going through the 21 days without animal products, and i am finding it suprisingly easy (even with no cheese). The book has an obvious american slant but don't let that put you off. If you are toying with the idea of becoming a vegan or just want to discover how or why, then you could do a lot worse than buying this book.
An essential read for fence-sitters!
Straight-forward, plain talking, with plenty of practical advice, this book is a must-read for anyone thinking of going vegan, or newly vegan. It really helped me clarify my own thinking, and gave me useful strategies to deal with the daily practicalities of being vegan in a largely carnivorous world. Although many of the specific products mentioned are for the American market,the advice is invaluable, and the extensive referencing gives plenty of scope for further, more detailed personal research.
As a new vegan, I would have been lost without this book, but it has consolidated my resolve, and my belief that my choice has been the right one for me. I would also recommend this book if someone you know has just gone vegan, and you want to understand why.
Tofu power!
