The Epic Trilogy in one Epic Volume
Philip Pullman's trilogy is a spectacular achievement, and you only have to look at the hundreds of reviews around the Internet to get a flavour of the positive feeling towards these stories. From my point of view, they are probably the best stories I have ever read, and fill your mind with the most amazing pictures, the most intense emotions and the most spectacular twists and turns you are ever likely to come across.
This edition is a three-in-one hard back, which could easily sit on your shelf alongside Lord of the Rings. It's a re-issue of the edition I own (which has a black cover, not the blue one shown in this picture), and I must admit that my romanticism leaves me really liking big, hard back books. This volume wouldn't be out of place on a story-teller's knee in front of a fire, and is a lovely way of giving someone these wonderful stories.
Also, it puts the books together as one story which, in all honesty, is what they are. One long, brilliant story.
fantastic for all ages
My 9 year old daughter received all 3 of these books, - you can not own just one they are too exciting! - and has read every word from beginning to end. They look long, however because of the excellent storyline she couldn't put them down. They have progressed her reading onto more sophisticated books, while making her look beyond Jacquiline Wilson. She encouraged me to read them too, and was amazed at their detail.
They are also good for boys and girls as there are lead characters of both sexes. Some of the story line is almost Dr Who-like, with parallel worlds, strange creatures and lots of adventure - get them, everyone will love them.
Put Your Imagination to Work
In a visual world it is all too easy to let others take over your imagination. You accept other peoples' visions as your own. It is convenient, easy, saves your effort but in effect makes your creative abilities go first numb and then dead. This is a book which may help re-awaken what you might have forgotten ever having. Or what you never had, brought up in front of a TV screen.
It would be a spoiler to give out any hints about the content - anyway, it is too complex to be summed up in a review in any but a ridiculous way. The important part is that Pullman creates a whole new world in his book, a world at an angle to ours and he gives you a chance to join him in the trip this book is, imagining the world he describes. If the book had nothing more to offer (and it is hardly the case) this alone would make it a perfect choice.
I could never understand why Harry Potter became a world bestseller and Pullman lagged behind. Let's hope that the movie and general interest that follows will give Pullman the place he has always deserved.
