Synopsis
NEVER LIE TO A LADY follows the life of Xanthia Neville, a twenty-nine year old spinster, who was Martinique's aunt in the School for Heiresses short story. Xanthia was an impoverished orphan who grew up, along with her two brothers, in Barbados, where they inherited a run-down sugar plantation from their abusive, alcoholic uncle. They later started a shipping company which made them extremely rich. Years ago, the eldest brother died, leaving Xanthia to run the shipping company. For political reasons, they eventually lease out the plantations to the African slaves who work them, and decide to relocate Neville Shipping to London so the business can expand.

pacy read
i do agree with the other reviewer when they commented that the two lovers fall for each other very quickly so it is lacking at bit of tension between them to carry the story so the sub plot becomes more interesting and the romance is just the foil for the story. i did have an inkling as to who the criminals were but there was enough red herrings to keep you guessing. great read with some passion, crime and all the stuff that make historical romances!!!
Very enjoyable read
Liz Carlyle is one of those authors who always delivers and I have kept all of her books. This is about a dissolute, half-Russian Marquis who meets his match in a formidable young business woman who is the sister of a Baron. Set in London in 1828, with a treason-based sub-plot, it makes the most of the glittering London social scene with lots of balls and other outings. Very original with lots of witty dialogue and some steamy but very romantic love scenes. The only reason I haven't given this 5 stars is because it slightly lacked tension between the hero and heroine. They fall for each other very quickly and there are no significant obstacles for them to overcome.
