Review of Call of Cthulhu
I found the Call of Cthulhu rulebook to be a fascinating read, with reams of info on game play, creatures, spells and the cthulhu mythos. It also contains a whole host of historical data, with the Psychology section standing out in my mind.
This book should be a must for any horror gamer, and any Lovecraft fan should consider it too. My only criticism is the repetition and poor standard of some of the artwork, but the general body of art is still provocative and inspiring.
A solid, professional piece of work.
Just a rulebook
This is just a rulebook, nothing to get excited about.
And let's be frank, compared to other rpgs out there, the rules in CoC are so simple that this book is probably a bit too long. Through the different editions, they still keep an original H.P. Lovecraft story at the frond and then tackle the rules, monsters and three scenarios to play. A great part of the book deals with mythos stuff, that, quite frankly, could be left out as it adds nothing to the gameplay.
Also, if you are going to play this game, you are likely familiar with H.P.L's opus, so you don't need to read the ambientation stuff.
I have played D&D 4th ed. for a year and they have complicated gameplay so much that I have gone back to CoC after more than ten years, and this 6th edition is not very different from what it was back in the 90s. Even the inside illustrations are the same!
