From the Publisher
New Book Will Maximize Your Riding Lessons
Elizabeth Taylor may have had a top trainer to transform her into National Velvet on the silver-screen, but how can today's beginning riders make sure they get the most out of their riding instruction? Riding lessons form the foundation of any aspiring equestrian's experience, so it's essential new riders learn all they can. Author Mike Smith offers the perfect companion guide to instructor training in "Getting the Most from Riding Lessons." Intended to complement and reinforce the material and techniques taught in riding classes, this guide makes it easier for the rider to feel comfortable with horses and learn his or her way around the barn. Smith helps readers feel confident and at ease with an instructor, and includes information about safety, horse behavior, basic riding lessons, and practicing.

Customer Reviews

Excellent-highly recommended5
This book gives useful information not found in other titles. It suggests ways to clearly communicate with your instructor, how to select a good lesson horse, practical exercises to improve your riding skills and lots of other helpful advice. It's practical, easy to read and straightforward.

A horse riders must.5
As a riding instructor I am forever looking for books that will help me teach my students - This book is a must! Many times when reading "how too" books" the author forgets that teaching children and beginner adults the most important thing is to be able to explain a particular lesson in 20 different ways. With this book, however, the first way is the easiest. I am sure this book will help those who interested in learning. It's Great!

Clear, direct text and good photos enlighten reader-riders.5
Mike Smith has a knack for cutting right to the information that new riders crave, such as: "How do I get on this huge beast?" and "What do I do if my horse runs away?" Both new riders and more experienced equestrians will enjoy his writing. It's almost as good as a trip to the barn. The school horse profiles at the beginning of each chapter helped me relate to each lesson--and they were funny, too. (What horse won't tell it's age?) I highly recommend Mike Smith's book for all riders taking lessons--and their teachers, too.
