Product Description

Two enchanting explorations of Greece by bicycle. Mounted on his trusty steed, Edward explores the beauty and history of the Pelopponese in a travelogue that combines wit, charm and scholarship. Returning to Greece to follow in the footsteps of the Romantic poet Lord Byron, Edward's second trip sees him pedalling around the great historic sites of Epirus as he completes his own mini odyssey.

Editorial Reviews

Oneword Radio, Paul Blezard, review, 19 June 03
'should be on every creative writing course syllabus as an example of travel writing at its best'.

The Anglo-Hellenic Review
'Edward Enfield's jaunty prose certainly begins to convince you that it would be worth the trip'

Anthony Campbell - web site, September 03
'Enfield makes an agreeable travelling companion for the reader, with a pleasantly dry wit and an observant eye.'

Customer Reviews

the best travel book ever!5
There are many books written by those who have gone to live in Spain, Italy, France etc but I have not been able to track down any about life after moving to Greece. I stumbled across the author's book whilst on my search for such a book and what a find.

The writing is perceptive, witty and most of all makes you feel that you want to get on your bike and make the journey yourself.

The author's son Harry may be the most famous member of the Enfield family but if the author continues to write such excellent travellogues I fear that may not be the case for long!

Can't wait for his next book!

For the "armchair" Grecian cyclist!4
I have read Enfield's book on cycling in France and also when he "freewheeled" through Ireland and enjoyed both immensely.

I really like Mr. Enfield senior's style - he has a way about his writing that exudes kindly old gentleman.

That said, I was a little disappointed with this book. I felt that he was shoe-horning facts in here and there to bulk out the book and it didn't really flow like the Ireland and France books.

That apart I still really enjoyed this book and recommend it to anyone who would love to cycle round Greece but who isn't up to it - either through age, ill-health or sloth!

A Crushing Disappointment!1
Knowing the area covered well, I was really looking forward to a good, nostalgic read. Sadly, what I encountered was not a example of "the best travel writing" but a boring and monotonous diary of uninteresting factoids trotted out one after another.

I'm afraid that, apparently like all of us, Mr Enfield had a book inside him - in this case it was a pity that some misguided publisher chose to unleash it. I truly can find nothing positive to say about this collection of ramblings other than "avoid at all costs"!
