Product Description

Veteran presenter and football legend Bob Wilson conducts another engaging romp through sport's more colourful terminology. Why is fighting in a square ring with strange gloves on called boxing? Why is it so difficult to stand up in the Pope's living room? And why does the Prince of Wales dislike buckets of nails and people with wet feet? "Rucks, Pucks & Sliders" reveals all as Bob Wilson explores the derivation of another collection of bizarre words and phrases from the wonderfully rich language of sport. Find out why, as a custodian, Bob has spent much of his life trying to keep bananas out of onion bags, why a submarine can often land you in a sin bin, who killed the Galacticos, why snooker balls wipe their feet, and why you'll never see a condor from the Crow's Nest. Laced with anecdotes from Wilson's own football and television careers, "Rucks, Pucks & Sliders" features one of sport's most enduring icons guiding us through the fascinating true meanings, heritage and evolution of great sporting terms we use today. As Kevin Keegan said of his previous book, 'It's a lesson in the language of sport from a man that should know.'

Bob Wilson's compendium should be sent out by right to every lad when he reaches the age of assent, in exactly the same way centurions receive a telegraph from the Queen' Scotland on Sunday 'Brilliant. Customer Reviews

Many are selected but few are chosen5
Once again the perfect bite size summaries and anecdotes of all those quirky names and phrases. An absolute must for the sports enthusiast - seated or otherwise. Easy to pick up and dip into or spend an hour or two finding the answers to those sporting questions you knew you always thought you knew. Smart in look and feel as well as content.

I bought the last one, Googlies, Nutmegs and Bogeys for most of my family for Christmas and birthdays and they'll be getting the same this year!

There are many anecdotal sporting books out there but this is the one to choose. I thoroughly recommend it and if you haven't got the first one, buy them both!

dare i say it but it's brilliant5
I grew up watching Bob on Grandstand and as a Spurs fan, it pains me to say I always thought he was great. It pains me just as much to say that his book is excellent as well. It's highly entertaining and also brilliant in that I've already nailed what I'm going to give my brothers and dad for Christmas and it's only September!
