Editorial Reviews
Review
An interesting book I thought it would just be "pretty" fairies - but Paul has lots more fun with them... He starts with an overview of materials and then goes on to some excellent basic explanations of simple painting techniques that he uses. He suggests some simple colour combinations useful to achieve the way you want your fairy to appear, covering colours to use for natural skin tones to some amazing combinations for fantasy fairies.. I found his drawing technique very simple to follow, using a simple combination of ovals and circles, as i find figures difficult its something really useful for artists like myself. He shows how to turn a photograph of family members into a beautiful fairy portrait. When telling us about fairy characteristics he explains how changing length of limbs or facial characteristics makes such a difference to the appearance of the fairy, and illustrates his words with some simple sketches. I'd only thought of fairies with "butterfly" wings but Paul's fairies have Much more variation and that makes it such fun. He shows a painting of a super Gothic type fairy, mending a tear in her bat wing type wings with cobwebs. He shows some simple backgrounds and foregrounds, letting the fairy be the focus, and his fairies range from traditional to a fabulous modern urban lady, sitting among some debris of cigarette packets and discarded cans.. This is a super book for anyone interested in using their imagination to create fabulous fairy and magical paintings. There's so many ideas for taking the subject far further than a simple traditional fairy, and thats what makes it so exciting. --Jeannie Zelos Artworks
