Why buy another cook book? Because!!
I have hundreds of cook books. I read them in bed, in the living room, in the kitchen... Sometimes I even cook a recipe or two; mostly I get inspired by a book and then do my own thing.
Jill Norman's Winter Food sent me out shopping straight away and I can't wait to try a whole heap of recipes from it. The recipes are all simple but full of flavour, and they come from as far afield as Hungary and the Canary Islands (papas arrugadas con mojo is what I grew up with but have never seen in an English cook book before). Meaty meals, vegetarian feasts, wonderful winter salads, and desserts, all beautifully explained, commented, laid out and photographed.
I normaly steer clear of seasonal cookbooks, but this is one I have read from cover to cover and hope weather doesn't warm up to soon...
A PLEASANT CHANGE FROM THE TV/CELEBRITY CHEF OFFERINGS!
‘Who doesn’t relish the comforting, nourishing dishes of winter, as the nights draw in and the weather grows colder? Warm kitchens redolent of rich stews and spiced wine seem to defy the wind and rain outside, and Jill Norman proves that winter food need be neither unhealthy nor heavy.’
In our opinion, this lavishly produced cookery book is left 'out in the cold', a bit, because it is not getting the same High Street bookshelf exposure as is the current range, mainly from TV chefs.
Jill Norman is also very under-advertised as a highly respected cookery author.
The book has 192 high quality pages and is full of exciting, lively recipes to brighten up the winter months with full colour photography.
On page 83, Jill acknowledges the tremendous talents of 'Elizabeth David' with her recipe for 'Daube of Beef, a slow cooked provencal stew adapted from ED's own recipe in 'French Provincial Cooking', - which Jill was drawn to by the recipe instruction:-
'to cut the beef into squares about the size of half a postcard and the use of a strip of orange peel'!
A splendid book and at an excellent price, at Amazon, today!
I love this book
The blurb is absolutely right - we get excited about strawberries and asparagus but tend to forget that there is good food around in winter too. I particularly love the puddings - cranachan (oats, cream, honey and whisky with a few berries on top) takes 10 minutes to prepare and is absolutely delicious.
