A warm and funny take on angst, LA, and trying to fit in
Richard Novak is in incredible pain, but he can't remember if the pain has just started or if it has been there for some time. How he responds to this pain, and how others around him in his well ordered life respond to him as he tries to understand what's going on, form the basis of this funny and warm novel.
Richard has really withdrawn from life, and the things he suddenly feels compelled to do (like going to a donut shop, despite his daily visit from his nutritionist and the bags of healthy food she makes for him, or like attending a meditation course) bring him into contact with a different way of living which starts to open him up to the possibilities in life.
It's such a warm hearted book, not worthy at all, even with this title. Warning, though, if you have a weakness for sugary things: there is quite a lot about donuts...
LA is not for me
This was bought as part of a 3 for 2 deal and was unsure as to whether I'd like it.
I really enjoyed the story - it was surreal, things that happened were crazy but it didn't ditract from the story.
One thing's for sure - LA life is not for me. Bring on the donuts!
this book will save your life
when i have nothing to do, I like to re-read old books of mine. And something about this book... it is my most read one. It ahs no action, no suspense, no shootings, killings etc, its just a story of a divorced man trying to "survive" while also trying to get his son's love. And yet I cant let the book down. I love it so much, and everytime I read it I like the main character a little bit more.
