Get a life
I'm genuinely shocked at how unwatchable and fundamentally ghastly this is 'Reality Show' is. The fact this brain-dead nonsense TV trash was/is successful says a lot about the times we live in.
Big Brother is very dull. I think we could all agree on that. But culturally, in terms of what it says about Britain, it is very depressing indeed. These mentally challenged contestants are essentially minimally-educated small town low achievers, who want celebrity thrust upon them. Steer clear at all costs and get a life.
Selah, Dr Bee Clarke.
Lightweight.
When I brought this item, I was expecting some in-depth psychological analysis of this summers events. Plus some detailed behind the scenes information about why they made the decisions they did. And why they chose the specific housemates they did etc..
Instead it's a very lightweight item. Published in a magazine style format, with loads of pictures and not much text. It's like one of those books they make about Westlife for 12 year old girls.
It contains little more than vague descriptions of events, on a week by week basis. Plus a few brief magazine style interviews with the former housemates and some members of the production team - fans of the show will learn nothing new.
It's a nice memento of BB6 - but nothing more interesting than that.
Great book, shame about the DVD
Paul Flynn is very engaging and insightful in his analysis of each week in the house and the personalities of the housemates. He managed to give very balanced objective views for the most part. I agreed with a lot of the points he made - that Science was the most genuine, that Kemal had the most raw talent and potential, that Anthony would never have won without Craig or that love her or hate her Makosi was BB6. I thought he was a bit too dismissive of Mary and Roberto - they were decent housemates and deserved better. I also thought he was too soft on Saskia, Orlaith, Makosi and Sam, who he kept complimenting for being 'gorgeous looking women' as if this excused their horrible behaviour at times. I would have liked him to have delved deeper into certain characters - particularly Science and Derek - but I was happy his thorough analysis of Kemal, Makosi and Craig.
One of his most interesting points of discussion is how BB6 has had more potential winners than any other series. There are some interesting afterthoughts on what kept these onetime favourites from winning - Makosi (too sly) Kemal (too warped) Derek (too scathing) Science (too volatile) Maxwell & Saskia (too smug) Eugene (he took the money) - and that nice guy Ant (with a big help from Craig) won by default.
Apart from the BB story there's a lovely choice of colour pictures throughout the book and best of all interviews with the 16 housemates - most of whom seem more sane and pleasant two days after leaving the house.
The free DVD is pathetic. I mean if they couldn't be bothered re-editing and decided to simply slap a bit of old footage onto the DVD they could have at least chosen some vintage BB6 - say HM auditions? Mary's Birthday? Speed date night? Cidergate? The nominations lie? The Spy Ball? Instead we get 3 episodes of DR Uncut that weren't even the best of DR Uncut! I seem to remember that weeks 1, 3 and 5 inspired far more interesting entries. The hospital episode was particularly trite. For me the most entertaining bit was Derek and Kemal complaining about a smelly chicken - surely they could have done better than that?!
