Synopsis
Are you alright pet? will make you feel brave and confident enough to love yourself just the way you are. This simple, effective, technique requires no rocket science, no support groups and certainly no sitting around in a circle, cross-legged and confessing to somehow not being Elizabeth I, Florence Nightingale and Emmeline Pankhurst all rolled into one. It's the serious self-help equivalent of a cup of decent tea, a custard cream and a ruddy good cause to fight for. Chances are that you're already putting the few skills that you need into practice, each and every day. We Brits like our Health Service to be Public and our Self-Help to be Private. We like our play to be fair and our underdogs to be winners. The only outward sign of your day-to-day success - other than maybe occasionally leaping tall buildings to come to your own defence - will be an enigmatic "Now I know something you don't know" smile.

A refreshing change, but....3
With US authors (or UK authors writing in a US style) seeming to dominate the self-help genre it makes a refreshing change to find a book written by a Brit, and aimed at the British psyche. The ideas are really well-explained, written with a quirky humour (it's hard not to laugh out loud at some passages, so take care if reading in public!) and they do make real sense. However, after a while I found myself becoming frustrated by this book. Firstly, the repetition of the key theme is done to excess and quickly begins feels like padding, and secondly as a male I also began to feel a tad excluded as the way the book is written and the vignettes used imply that it's only women who suffer from low self-esteem, mid life crises and the like.

Ian Hutson clearly has talent and definitely something different to offer, but his style perhaps just needs a little honing yet (just ask Grace or Olivia!).

THROW OUT THE PILLS, LAUGH INSTEAD5
Ian Hutson is a talented user of words and has come up with an unusual concept to improve your levels of self esteem and worth. It's an easy read, but you have to grasp the idea of viewing yourself as a pet or underdog.

Forget the chaise longe and handing over loads of purple pieces of paper to some "expert". If you need to pump up your levels of assertiveness and self belief, then get yourself a copy of this book from a great scribe. I didn't acquire it for this reason; I discovered this writer in a different guise on eBay. As his listings are hilarious, I was hopeful his book may be of a similar ilk. Though not quite at the same level of laughter decibels, it's still a very worthy read.

Need greater confidence in yourself? Buy it and apply it.

Innovative, insightful and interesting.5
A unique view of the human psyche. I would recommend it to anyone in need of a hug from a friend. The author's approachable, non-judgemental style makes this book difficult to put down.
