Editorial Reviews

CD Description
HUMAN REMAINS is Allen's first solo album since the surprise success of his1994 musical CHIPPY (co-written with his wife, Jo Harvey Allen, and based on the diary of a west Texas prostitute from the '30s). The singer/songwriter/visual artist enlists the help of fellow Lubbockites the Maines brothers, fiddler Richard Bowden of the Austin Lounge Lizards, accordion ace Ponty Bone, David Byrne, and-most delightfully-Lucinda Williams on harmony vocals.
Allen's songwriting is atits sharpest on HUMAN REMAINS, especially on the wry "Gone To Texas" and the angry "After The Fall" and "Crisis Site 13", songs about Allen's fellow baby boomers and the children they've raised. As always, his lyrics recall a countrified Randy Newman in their first-person accounts of often- unlikeable people who nevertheless evoke sympathy and understandingin the listener. His music lands somewhere between Tom Waits' junkyard orchestrations and Lyle Lovett's somewhat skewedWestern swing.

When I first heard it I thought I had wasted my money but after the third listen someting clicked, its a work of intelligence and irony and now I love it. Don't buy it if you want country tunes, this guy is grinding an axe and its getting sharper. Have just bought lubbock on everything which is supposed to be his masterpiece, will listen with great interest as soon as it arrives.
