Editorial Reviews
From Amazon.com
Fugazi fans already know that this is the original gospel according to Ian MacKaye. This Washington, D.C., quartet hit harder, faster, and franker than just about anybody--and were willing to see through their own bull as quickly as anyone else's. MacKaye manages to be charismatic and confrontational at the same time: tossing brilliant, genuinely funny asides into his serious-as-a- heart-attack lyrics. Meanwhile, the band, led by Lyle Preslar's staggering guitar attack, pushes MacKaye on with the tightest, most razor-sharp sound in all of hardcore. Nothing in the punk pantheon can come close to "In My Eyes," "Out of Step," or "Salad Days." Absolutely essential. --Michael Ruby
CD Description
The Washington, D.C. straightedge hardcore punk scene beganwith Minor Threat. The band recorded two LPs on its own Dischord label, plus an EP and the miscellaneous singles that are collected on this CD. Many of the early recordings on this collection seethe with teen-age angst and indignation. Thesongs rage against bullies, religious hypocrisy, and the herd mentality.
Other songs, taken from later in Minor Threat's career, feature tighter and more sophisticated playing.Metallic flourishes tinge the guitar work, vocal harmonies abound, and song dynamics vary more than on the earlier record. On certain songs, Ian MacKaye's lyrics address the complexities of friendship, loyalty, and self-expression. "Look Back and Laugh", "Little Friend", and "It Follows" all incline more toward introspection and ambiguity; conveying loss and sadness in addition to outrage. This second set of songs seems to especially anticipate MacKaye's later work with Fugazi. The album also contains a few playful numbers like the sing-along cover of "Stepping Stone", and "Cashing In", a mocking dig at greedy musicians. Minor Threat believed completely in the power of its music, helping earn a loyal fan following and the respect of numerous other bands who emulated its style and credo.
Customer Reviews
The ESSENTIAL hardcore punk album.
What a treat. 26 tracks of Straight Edge and hardcore history... Minor Threat's whole work on one CD. The raw, inspiring energy of Ian Mackaye keeps you hooked throughout 45 mins of anger and bemusement as the band look at the trivialities of today's consumer society. The band that defined "Straight Edge" (but were not the ones responsible for the movement it has now become) left a mark in punk greater than mainstream fans will ever know - but the artists are indebted to.
Who'd believe Fugazi could be greater?
Minor Threat - Major Record
Upon buying this album I was sceptical, as I wasn't sure if I could handle the straight-edge rhetoric delivered by Minor Threat. However discounting Minor Threat's straight-edge tag and an idealised view of socialism this is a powerful and aggresive album that relentlessly delivers fast paced punk from beggining to end. My favourite tracks on the album are 'In My Eyes' 'Out Of Step (With The World)' and '(I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone'deliver a brutal assault on your senses. That is not to say that all of the tracks are not of a very high caliber. Any fan of hardcore or punk should buy this record and if your straight-edge and don't own this record - shame on you.
If you don't already have it, BUY THIS
It's one of the best Hardcore Punk albumns ever (in my opinion). A collection of all the 7 inches, EP's and songs on compilations, this is a must in anyone's collection. If you like this, then buy Flex Your Head compilation. Also, try Misfits (american psycho), Naked Raygun, Wipers (Youth Of America CD), Angry Samoans (discography CD), Black Flag (damaged CD, First 4 years CD)...
