Music to Lift Your Soul
Somewhere in the mid-90's I went to see Bonnie Raitt playing at Hammersmith, London. An acquaintance who'd been to the previous night's show told me to go early to catch the support band - The Subdudes. Was he ever right!!! What an amazing band!
4 guys strode onto a bare stage - simple set up of accoustic guitar, bass, accordion and tambourine - and preceded to blow the place apart. The sheer force of the voices, with harmonies that ripped into your soul, belied the sparse instrumentation. The noise and feel thet Steve Amedee generated from his miked up tambourine was staggering - you'd have sworn that there was a drummer with a full kit playing! Tommy Malone and John Magnie both have voices that most singers would kill for. Johnnie Ray Allen gave the whole thing a rock steady swing with his tasteful understated bass.
The next day I went out and bought this album and it confirmed all my emotions from the concert. Music for grown-up people. Real classy, tasteful, joyful, soulful - no instrument overused. Not many solos but, maybe because of that, everyone there is hits in beautifully.
Not a duff song on this superb album but I would recommend listening to Why Can't I Forget About You and Cold Nights and then tell me that you've heard any classier, more soulful songs since Aretha or Otis at their peaks.
If you only buy one album this year, buy this one (even though you should have bought it 10 years ago)! It'll take your life to a better place!
