Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
The title is a bit of a misnomer: The Supremes are anthologised in more comprehensive fashion on Motown's 40 Golden Motown Greats, while this package is denser, and has a higher hit-per-track ratio. But if you'd rather not spend the extra money, and if you want a good, thorough skimming of cream from the group's catalogue, this is the better choice. All of the familiar songs are here, with no major omissions--and they're packed in with a liberal helping of second-magnitude hits. --Gavin McNett

CD Description
Be assured that the title here is not remotely hyperbolic; in fact, it's hard to imagine a better single disc Supremes greatest hits collection. Every Supremes song you could conceivably want is here in chronological order, beginning with their first Top 40 hit, 1963's "When the Lovelight Starts Shining Through His Eyes", to 1969's cleverly calculated farewell smash "Someday We'll Be Together".
All of them are in the original glorious mono. This compilation is also a pretty interesting time capsule look at various '60s pop styles; for example, in retrospect, it's hard to think of the Supremes as having ever been remotely psychedelic, but even theygot a little trippy with songs like "The Happening" and "Reflections".

Customer Reviews

70 minutes of the world's greatest girl band. Fantastic.5
If you've ever hummed along to You Keep mr Hangin' On, this is your ticket. In the month since I bought the CD, it has seldom been out of my hi-fi. This collection is filled with gorgeous nuggets of motown magic. The Supremes were done and dusted way before my time, but this is the best music investment I've made for a long time. Guaranteed to get you singing into your hairbrush. Brilliant.

The best single CD compilation of their music5
The Supremes were a brilliant group but there was plenty of sadness behind the scenes. Florence Ballard was the original lead singer. Several singles were released without success, after which Diana Ross replaced Florence as lead singer. Songwriters Holland-Dozier-Holland were brought in at the same time and nobody will ever know which change was the most significant. Florence eventually left the Supremes, to be replaced by Cindy Birdsong. Diana Ross left to go solo in 1970, at which point this compilation ends.

The Supremes had just one British number one hit (Baby love) but they had many number ones in the American pop charts. Many of those were also top ten hits in Britain, but even those that weren’t became famous anyway.

A glance at the track listing shows several classic songs, including Baby love, Stop in the name of love, Back in my arms again, I hear a symphony, My world is empty without you, You can’t hurry love, You keep me hanging on and Someday we’ll be together. Anybody who has listened to sixties pop music will know all these songs and at least some of the others. Furthermore, some songs have been cover hits for others, keeping the music alive for future generations. I particularly remember Kim Wilde’s version of You keep me hanging on, but there have been others.

There have been many compilations of Supremes music, including double CD’s and boxed sets, but this single CD contains all the essentials. If you only want one CD of their music, this is the one to buy.

One Big Hit Missing1
This is a (virtually) chronlogical compilation so there's not much to review. The Supremes certainly got the pick of the Holland-Dozier-Holland hit mix (except "Jimmy Mack") and some of these songs are breathtakingly well written. Ironically, Diana Ross' limited delivery helped - she sang the songs totally straight - just like a good pop singer should.

But where the hell is "Stoned Love". This was one of my all time favourites and any Supremes collection without it is not worth buying. On that basis it's a bad compilation and is why it gets one star.

Next time get all the songs in. Imagine a Rolling Stones compilation without "The Last Time" or "Jumpin' Jack Flash". No, I wouldn't buy it either.
