Motown's brilliant rough diamond
Motown in the sixties were famous for a particular sound that had it's roots in R+B, but had all the rough edges polished off. Junior Walker (unlike their other stars) was allowed to record in his own way (very raw R+B), although he was eventually persuaded to record some mellow soul music, more typical of the Motown sound.
On this compilation, you get examples of Junior's raw sound (tracks like Shotgun and I'm a road runner) and his more mellow sound (particularly What does it take to win your love) as well as his versions of Motown classics (How sweet it is and Come see about me) which serve to emphasise his different style compared to the other Motown acts.
Junior was a saxophonist who ended up singing as well, but he's not a great singer in the true sense of the word. His voice, like his music, was a little rough, but it has an appeal which is hard to define.
This is as strong a collection as you could hope to find on a single CD, with all the essential tracks and a few interesting extras.
