One of the most evocative and oft-reproduced images of the Jam is a shot of the band playing live onstage to an obviously enthusiastic audience. However the power of the photograph lies not in the obvious enthusiasm of the audience, but inthe image of bassist Bruce Foxton propelling himself straight up in the stratosphere without the benefit of either trampoline of rocket launcher. Suffice to say those that were lucky enough to see the Jam's literally and figuratively electric stage show on a variety of tours will never forget the band's almost manic energy.
For the rest of us, there is LIVE JAM, the closest thing available to actually being drenched in Paul Weller's sweat. While LIVE JAM concentrates mostly on the Jam's more soulful later years, it does not skimp on earlier favourites such as "Modern World" and "Mr. Clean". However, it is in the later, more nuanced material that LIVE JAM truly shines. Somehow the obvious tension in the band(Foxton and drummer Buckler vs. Weller) led to truly transcendent versions of "Down in the Tube Station At Midnight" and "Town Called Malice". This live album is a lasting testament to a brilliant band.

Brilliant
Its 12 or 13 years ago now since I bought this album but its one I keep coming back to. It was my introduction to the Jam. I'd gotten into Weller in the Wildwood era and vaguely new something about the jam and him being in the band. It was about the time I was becoming obsessed with all things mod. My dad's old Who and Small Faces records used to go on every day after school. Then I heard Live Jam! Wow! The power, the aggression, the sheer energy coupled with Weller's musical genious had me hooked right away. All these years later and The Jam and The Style Council are still two of my favourite bands.
Buy it!
The best of their era
To those of you who didn't see The Jam live - you are not wrong, they were awesome and absolutely at the top of their game around 1979-80. They were still only in their early 20s. Compare that with today's fame hungry "X Factor" contestants warbling two minute cover versions and expecting the world to fall at their feet. This was three young blokes picking up their equipment, rehearsing in garages, playing upstairs in dingy pubs, writing their own quite brilliant songs and simply going out there night after night and DOING IT for their fans.
This CD replicates pretty much a Jam show circa 1979-81 with all the furious, breakneck pace anger, questioning and frustration of life when you're young. Check out the rumbling bass, the insistent drums and the spat out vocals and just wish you could have been there. I was and I thank God for it ! I was lucky, very very lucky.
This CD is at a great price too. Well worth it.
This is what it was like
I saw the Jam twice in 1977-78. This album, for a ridiculous price, is something you should buy, firstly for yourself and secondly, and more importantly, for your (possibly future)children, so they can understand you when you complain about the triviality of modern "music". Rock and roll doesn't get better than this, though the Stones, Dolls, Kennedys, Television et al provide reasonable competition. Don't waste your money on another pint or ten fags, buy this.
