CD Description
Released at the height of ABBA's mid-'90s renaissance, whenthe Swedish foursome became fashionable again after years of critical and commercial neglect (thanks in part to films such as Priscilla, Queen of the Desert and Muriel's Wedding),THANK YOU FOR THE MUSIC is a four-CD treasure trove of hitsand obscurities. The fact that the fourth and final disc consists entirely of rare and unreleased gems should entice those who still own the band's original releases.
The firstthree discs--52 tracks in all--consolidate all of the group's chart-topping singles, adding the best of their album tracks and a handful of live recordings and alternate mixes. Disc four is an intriguing collection of demos, outtakes, and multi-lingual versions of popular singles. Exquisitely packaged and well annotated, THANK YOU FOR THE MUSIC shows why ABBA is considered by many the pinnacle of '70s commercial pop.
Customer Reviews
Nice and interesting collection but incomplete
I was soooo thrilled when I first saw this 4-CD-Box and I bought it immediately. Rare B-sides, the full version of "Summer Night City" and of course the unreleased material on CD 4- no ABBA- fan could have asked for more. But there were two things that I was and still am not saitsfied with. As every ABBA- fan knows "Just Like That" is a track they never officially released- although every fan wanted to hear it. On the cover of this box set it says "including Just Like That"- a line that made my heart beat a little bit faster. But listening to the unreleased material I realized that it was only an excerpt of the song- chorus, a little bit of saxophone, chorus, fade- I was very disappointed. I don't want to be too pedantic about the whole thing but knowing the complete version of Just Like That I cannot understand why they didn't include it in that collection. I agree with Agnetha who was quoted:" I think it's a very good recording- it's one of my big favourites and I hope it's going to be released some day". So do I... because it's a much better song than "I Am The City" which was recorded at the same time and was eventually released on "More ABBA Gold". The other thing that annoys me is the fact that after reading "The Complete Recording Sessions" by Carl Magnus Palm we all know that there was another verse sung in "Dancing Queen" and "On And On And On", they recorded some sort of Disco Version of "Like An Angel Passing Through My Room" and even recorded am uptempo version of "The Winner Takes It All". Wgy they didn't include all these alternative versions on that CD and instead gave us crap single B-sides like "Santa Rosa" (Benny's comment on that one: "This is one we should have left unrecorded")I will never understand. Three stars for a CD- Box-Set that is quite interesting, has a nice booklet and of course brilliant music- but leaves the real ABBA fan with a lot left to be desired. Sort wasted chance, really....
My My! DA-NANGG!
Who would have thought just under 30 years ago that a quartet from Scandanavia could dominate pop culture in the decade to follow (via the much-ridiculed Eurovision Song Contest) and leave a legacy of some of the greatest pop songs ever? I suppose the same sort of folks who laughed at the idea of 4 Scousers becoming bigger than Elvis 10 years earlier!
This package has probably the most played CDs in our house (so much that certain tracks are now sticking) and, unlike some who have reviewed this set before now, we aren't die hards but we sure love this box. The reason for its continual use is simple: bloody great pop music arranged & performed beautifully with a quality that hasn't dimmed in the years since we first heard them (yes, we are that old).
I urge those who have been pining to own some ABBA in their life to get this over ABBA Gold 1+2 or 'The Definitive Collection'. All three of those sets ignore some excellent album material but this box doesn't (stop sniggering at the back they did have some good LP-only songs - for example the sublime 'Eagle', 'The Visitors', 'Like An Angel...' and 'Honey Honey').
Of course, ALL (and I mean ALL) the singles are here and it's nice to see few difficult-to-find B-sides and unreleased tracks such as the lovely 'Cassandra' and 'Just Like That'. The book is a splendid collection of reflective essays from those around the ABBA circle along with a lot of the fantastic iconographical images from their time.
Only downside for me is the exclusion of 4 great songs - 'Bang-A-Boomerang', 'Rock Me', 'Happy New Year' and the studio version of 'Slipping Through My Fingers'. But this is a small gripe considering the love and hard graft put into this excellent box which has absolutely every other classic song by the Super Swedes.
Earlier this year, inspired by our love of ABBA we went to visit Stockholm for a short break - coincidentally 5 days after the 30th Anniversary of their win at the Swedish heats of ESC. After watching their videos for more than 20 years it seemed like deja-vu walking around the streets of the Gamle Stan (that's Old Town to you folks). It's a great city and one wonders what would have happened if Olivia Newton-John had won the 1974 ESC instead? Would I be reeling over the delights of the HMS Patricia nightclub in the harbour? Or the beautiful parliament building? Probably not. So (here comes the cliche) THANK YOU FOR THE MUSIC, ABBA! And for giving wonderful Stockholm to me!
Wonderful music
The first three CDs cover ABBA's career including all the hits, all the rare b-sides and some superior album tracks. It is a feast of wonderful music. My only complaint is the use of the edited version of The Name Of The Game and the fact that so many great songs are not included. This should have been a five CD collection so that gems like Happy New Year, Arrival, One Man One Woman, Move On, As Good As New, If It Wasn't For The Nights, Rock Me, Tiger etc. could be included. The fourth CD is only for the fans and as such it is pretty good, including some rare tracks and some that had never been released before. It could have been even better had it included full versions of Hamlet III, Just A Notion, Rubber Ball Man and Just Like That. At least we get excerpts of those great tracks. For any lover of great timeless music.
