Customer Reviews

Compulsory purchase order for fans of J.B.5
This anthology comfortably bears comparison with the Godfather's greatest work comprising singles, b-sides and standout tracks by the soul brother #1's backing band. Every track on both CDs is monstrous, combining finger-eating funkiness and peerless musicianship from the likes of Fred Wesley, Bootsy Collins and sax-miester Maceo Parker. Whilst these tracks were released by his backing band in various guises, the Godfather's presence is infused in this album like a funky watermark - indeed J.B. claims writing and performance credits on most songs. The compilation delves into a full sock draw of J.B.'s recordings, pulling out diverse numbers such as the up-tempo 'More Peas' and the burning slow funk of 'Same Beat'. If you only ever buy one album, make it this one and put it on repeat.

Awesome anthology of James Brown's "other" band5
Yes, the JB's stands for James Brown's. This is his legendary backing group from the early 70'swith him in it as the frontman. Personnel include Fred Wesley, Bootsie AND Catfish Collins, Clyde Stubbefield (the "funky drummer") and Maceo Parker. So as you can proably imagine its as tight and as funky as f#@k.

Comparable to Zappa's backing bands, these guys were drilled like a military unit, and had many line ups, but were always unbelievable. As the great Rickey Vincent puts it. "The James Brown Revue invented funk, and the JB's perfected it".

This compilation includes The Grunt and Pass the Peas, but the highlight has to be the 12 minute long Doin' It To Death (they quite literally are). Its a slow cooked stew that gets better as it goes along, and even better over time on successive listens. It clicks and swaggers along like a predatory lover who knows they're sexy beyond belief and can get whatever they hell they want from you.

But above all its about the key change in the middle, when the band "Get into D". James Brown forecasts its coming, but then holds it off till the last possible moment, teasing us and repeating over and over "Get into D", "Get into D", "Get into D". Then finally it hits and its like an orgasm.

The dirtiest, sexiest funk I know.

Funk - and then some more4
The bands that James Brown fronted contained some of the finest musicians from the 70's. here you get to hear some of the best Funk tracks, made by the JBs - in various lineups but always with the peerless Fred Wesley, Browns musical arranger and trombonist ( yeah I know - a trombone !!!)

If you can sit still while this is on then you might just have a hole in your Soul, this is as fine a Funk compilation as there is.
