CD Description
Singer Maysa Leak has left the fold, but Incognito's big, brassy British soul remains the same on 100 DEGREES AND RISING. Electric pianos lay down jazzy R&B vamps, strings sweep in with graceful accents, and horns play with and respond to the vocals, all over a variety of percolating funk beats. Put these parts together and you might call it acid jazz. It'sa modern name for music that sounds like they used to make it--group-driven, roots-conscious and, above all, sophisticatedly soulful. And the superb new trio of vocalists that contributes to this, the band's fifth album, slides right in aspart of the collective.
As the title implies, sweat drips and tension bubbles beneath the smooth surface of 100 DEGREES AND RISING in the tradition of all great urban soul. From the foreboding stabs of strings that kick off the opener, "Where Did We Go Wrong", like something out of the old soundof Philadelphia, Incognito honours that tradition. "Roots (Back To A Way Of Life)" announces itself with a blast of brass straight out of Earth, Wind & Fire's "Shining Star". "TooFar Gone", an electric piano ballad featuring a marvellously melancholic vocal turn by Barry Stewart, has the feel of early Stevie Wonder. And Incognito can simply lay back and groove too: "Barumba" is Spanish soul, and "After The Fall", one of the album's three instrumentals, has a breezy flugelhorn feel, like Chuck Mangione overhauled and reimagined by the Brand New Heavies.
Customer Reviews
Not a bad track - excellent playing and great tunes!
I just had to write this review as I couldn't allow this album to have such a luke-warm presence on Amazon!!
Some fantastic songs - you'll start checking to see where you've heard them before but they are so memorable they ingrain themselves on your mind very quicly!!
And the production, arrangements and playing are superb - simply top quality.
Not only do we have the excellent core of all the best Incognito - their fantastic rhythm section Julian Crampton is on top form particularly on bass - but you alss have some of the best Jazz musicians in the UK - like Ed Jones on Saxes and Gerard Presencer on Trumpet/Flugel.
But the songs and the depth of vocal talent really stand out as always with Incognito - I cannot recommend this highly enough and if you like Jazz Funk, Acid Jazz or whatever you want to call it - this is an essential purchase - you won't regret!
Excellent to play at a dinner party.
This CD is a wonderful mixture of soft soul, funk, with a hint of jazz and brazilian thrown in for good measure. Lead singer Pamela Anderson - no,not the one you are thinking of - uses her vocal talents to the full blending in perfectly with the instrumental production. I always reach for this CD when having a dinner party or relaxing in the sun with a glass of Chablis. Without exception the music is always commented on and enjoyed. I hope you enjoy it too.
