4 Stars because of "Summer Madness"
Kool and the Gang were a street Funk outfit, so if you buy this expecting "Ladies Night" or one of their other bland overproduced pop hits you'll be disappointed.
This is from the twilight of their Funk period though, and J.T. Taylor had yet to make his influence felt, So make the most of tracks like "Higher Plane", all bassline and punctuating horns, with a wailing sax underscoring the chanted vocal. "Rhyme Tyme People" has more of the same, as does "Street Corner Symphony", but without a vocal.
You'll also get a couple of mellow tunes, the best being "You Don't Have To Change", but everything pales into insignificance when faced with the truly superb "Summer Madness", with it's jazzy laid back groove, which for me represents Kool and the Gangs finest hour.
This isn't the best Kool album, nor is it a great example of a Funk album, but worth it for Summer Madness alone.
