Editorial Reviews
Amazon.co.uk Review
An apt title if ever there was one. On their second CD, Blackstreet went from being just another Teddy Riley act to a serious soul contender. Part of the reason can be heard on "No Diggity": easily the best single of 1996, it married a slinky Delta riff to four-part harmonies and hip-hop swagger. But Blackstreet proved they were more than just a one-hit wonder, or Riley's talented puppets. With Teddy's production (and vocals), some seriously fine songs--most notably the mid-tempo ballad "Don't Leave Me"--and singing from the other three members, Another Level elevated Blackstreet from R&B faves to pop stars, all without skimping on the attitude or the grooves. --Amy Linden
CD Description
Teddy Riley's fans were begging for a reunion of Guy, the trio with which he brought deep-soul music back to the R&B genre, but Riley chose to forge ahead with his new band, Blackstreet, instead. Wise move. Blackstreet's second album really does take the Riley R&B sound to ANOTHER LEVEL. It's one of the best R&B albums we've heard in a long time.
The tracks here are unbelievably funky, and though two of Blackstreet's four singers have turned over since the debut--the new ones are Eric Williams and Mark L. Middleton--the vocal harmonies are breathtaking. Classic Stevie Wonder would be an apt comparison. Riley evokes old-school soul a number of timeshere--"Don't Leave Me" and "The Lord Is Real" sample the DeBarge tunes "A Dream" and "Time Will Reveal", respectively. But that's not to say Blackstreet doesn't move forward to ANOTHER LEVEL, because with super-producer Riley, of course itdoes.
Customer Reviews
Phat tunes, beautiful harmonies and 100% soulful!
'No Diggity' is surely a song that will go down in R'n'B history. Teddy Riley proves his great producing talents and his three partners bring out the best in every tune. 'Don't leave me' will stick in your heart and 'fix' is just bursting with energy!
Nope not the boy band...a different level altogether
Fix-excellent.....No diggity - the first track wihout a bass line...so how did they make it sound so PHAT.....true songsters who can hold a lyric and tune, but get down and dirty with the best of them.....well worth a listen..
Recognised Dre
Funny, I have several times heard a track on the radio - including Eminem, Mary J Blige, Eve and possibly even others- and I think YES! perfect! I Love It! And it always turns out to have included some input from Dr Dre. So it was the same with Blackstreet when I first heard 'No Diggity'. Excellent. But I am not so sure about the rest of the album which is pretty same-y.
