Nice and easy
This album will take you on a journey. At the beginning it will get you excited and remind you the fun of being single and maybe trying to hook up with a lady. Then as you hit the halfway point it tells you how great it it to be with someone you love and that there's nothing wrong in showing a bit of sensitivity to the love of your life. The second half of the album is a smooch-a-thon (hopefully you will now what that means,even if you have a better phrase for that kind of situation,perhaps I'm getting old?) The youngsters into the new millenium R&B will do well to see where this kind of music production and lyrics were coming from in the 90's ,it's still cool now, and I for one would recommend the boys listening to the first half, and the boys and girls listening to the second half. Have fun!

A Classic Riley Production
With the demise of 'Guy' Teddy Riley looked to form a group that could provide a home for his creative energies, and 'Blackstreet' was Riley's immediate home after his acrimonious split with the Hall brothers. The project first came to the attention of the music public on the soundtrack to 'CB4', where the track 'Baby Be Mine' had created a stir with its typically dynamic Riley production and accompanying strong vocal performance. On the basis of this song (which was released in the UK on two separate 12" singles) the expectation was high that this album would build on the success of all of Riley's previous projects.

And, arguably, this is the most consistent Riley production in the post -Guy years, representing the sum total of his production values and art. This is Riley producing after his experiences working with Guy, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Deja, Keith Sweat, Redhead Kingpin and Wrecks 'N' Effect, Bobby Brown and Al B Sure!, and the confidence and assurance shines through as he steers a course between post - 'New Jack Swing' material ('Baby Be Mine','Booti Call') to slower, love infused quality tracks like 'Tonight's The Night' (featuring the vocals of erstwhile Riley collaborator Tammy Lucas) and a striking cover of Stevie Wonder's 'Love's In Need'.

Fans might have initially hesitated when they realised that the version of 'Baby Be Mine' on the album was being sung by a different vocalist to that featured on the 'CB4' soundtrack, but the undeniable quality of the vocals on display would have quickly dispelled any possible concerns. Indeed there isn't much about this title that can be criticised, except perhaps the fact that you get a lot of music for your money. There are some moments when it is very easy to feel as if you are being presented with too much of a good thing, but how many records can have that accusation levelled against them?

In terms of overall quality and consistency this is the best album produced by Riley under the Blackstreet project. Whilst it may not have an instantly recognisable track to rival the popularity of the later 'No Diggity' it is a far superior album which allows the listener to wallow in the sheer excellence of the vocal harmonies and tight production.

This album proved that Riley had a life beyond 'New Jack Swing', the genre which he had almost single handedly created and dominated, and for fans of 'Guy' it provided some comfort as an interim to the longed for 'Guy' reunion (which would eventually happen but was still some way off in the future).

For a music fan looking to explore the world of black music post New Jack Swing this should be considered an essential purchase. Highly recommended.
