Customer Reviews
Probably the best thing Gino Vanelli has ever done
First heard Gino on Crazy Life in what I understand is his native Canada way back in the early seventies. Just looking at all the entries for Gino Vannelli it is sad to see that none of the CDs have been reviewed. Perhaps that says more about the fact that all of them represent Gino at his best back in the Seventies when they were all first released by A & M Records as LPs with a lot of support from Herb Alpert himself. This must surely rate as the best from that time. Gino and his brother Joe got it right with this. Add to that that the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra were enlisted to play on Black and Blue and a Pauper in Paradise at Abbey Road Studios and the rest was done at Air Studios in London and you get the feeling that there was some serious commitment to quality here. The production is quite huge and all the tracks have travelled well since they are nearly 25 years old. Undoubtedly ,Gino has much to thank his brother Joe who as ever had a big input in this from his extensive piano and synth contributions to his arrangements of many of the tracks. Gino has a powerful voice, one minute it is huge on Valleys of Valhalla then it is soft on The Surest Things Can Change. Don't be put off by the 4 movements of A Pauper in Paradise .This is'nt a concept album from the seventies it is just the right way to let the Royal Phil know where they are going. Gino was there long before George Michael tried to copy him. Since no one has written a review and you chance upon this, virtually the first for any of Amazon's listings for Gino, then do yourself a great favour and raid the piggy bank and invest in this. This is real emotion in a recording and the analogue recording has travelled well from its origins way back in 1977. If you like what you hear, then go for The Gist of Gemini and then Storm at Sunup next and review them for Amazon. Its amazing what an impact these reviews have. Just look at the Eva Cassidy reviews and know that it's really OK to get emotional where good music is concerned.
The Ultimate in guilty pleasures
Everything that the first reviewer said.
I have been into Gino since the late 80s and would rate this and 'Gist of the Gemini' as his finest albums.
Good advice to start here or with Gist- if you like what you hear try 'Storm at Sun Up' and 'Powerful People', then on to' Brother to Brother' and 'Nightwalker'
Things changed a bit from the 80s but you can hear him grow through every album mentioned
The guy is a genius and life was partially completed for me when I finally saw him sing live in 2007.
Very emotional.
another stunning album
I agree with everything the reviewer below has said, except that I am torn between this and Gist of the Gemini as to which is my favourite. This really is a wonderful album and shows how versatile Gino's voice is.
