Editorial Reviews

CD Description
While the Moodies were never exactly a rocker's delight, SEVENTH SOJOURN, the seventh recording with the post-Denny Laine lineup, is perhaps their most ballad-heavy album. Ironically, the album's biggest hit, which would become one of the group's signature songs, was the uncharacteristically uptempo "I'm Just a Singer in a Rock and Roll Band". Elsewhere, appearances are equally deceiving; interpersonal tensions had developed in the band to the point where there wouldn't be another Moody Blues album for six years, but the album is full of slow, romantic musings, not signs of strife.
As usual, it's Justin Hayward, he of the silky voice and heart-on-a-sleeve lyricism, who excels at all this romantic balladry, his contributions being the most melodic and affecting. JohnLodge's aforementioned "I'm Just a Singer" is far and away the most energetic tune, but it closes the album and doesn'tdisturb the contemplative mood. Ironically, though the bandwas coming apart, they were also reaching new heights. Keyboardist Mike Pinder had traded in his Mellotron for its moresophisticated cousin, the Chamberlain, which provided an improved overall sound on SEVENTH SOJOURN.

Customer Reviews

seventh heaven5
I grew up obsessed with the music of the Moody Blues and nothing has changed in the 30-odd years since. As an angst-ridden teenager I could lock myself away and play all core seven albums back to back and be at one with the universe.

Unfortunately I don't get time to do that these days, but to my surprise and delight my children discovered the Moodies and do exactly the same thing!!!

The music of the Moodies, and the core seven in particular, gets to me in a way no other band before or since ever has, and I always return to it if I need a spiritual uplift. I still look through the 'Ms' in old record shops just in case I missed a hidden recording from the mists of time!!

I know that it's not cool to like the Moody Blues, but give them a listen - you certainly won't be disappointed and you may just be amazed!!

The Last Great Moodies Album5
This is the last of what became known as "The Core Seven" albums. IE Those recorded by the classic band line up + producer Tony Clarke. It has to be said there are a couple of weak tracks, there generally was on their albums, but the other material more than compensates. This contains what I consider to be Justin Hayward's best ballad, "New Horizons". Just sublime. If you are new to the band, go and buy the core seven, you won't be disappointed. I have owned the vinyl albums since they were released and all have been regularly played ever since. And that's over 30 years of music pleasure. Thank heavens for CDs as I can now give those 12 inch bits of plastic a well earned rest :)

Magnificent Moodies!5
Undoubtably, the Moody Blues were at the peak of their powers when Seventh Sojourn was released in 1972. It is a very fine ensemble effort highlighting the haunting and underrated guitar playing of frontman Justin Hayward, and showcasing some astonishing songs. Ray Thomas's sea-shanty style 'For My Lady' and Mike Pinder's revealing 'When You're A Free Man' are all important additions to the Moodies' song book, together with John Lodge's stomping blockbuster 'I'm Just A Singer In A Rock And Roll Band' - perhaps the most famous track on the album. Hayward also makes his presence felt with the earthly visions of 'New Horizons' - one of his most beautiful songs. An essential album, and no mistake.
