Amazon.co.uk Review
During the 1980s, Texas singer-songwriter Nanci Griffith graduated from modest folk celebrity to find herself signed to a major label and making thoughtful, better-heeled studio albums that were critical favourites but commercial anomalies in the country market where she was initially positioned. This 1993 project finds her returning to her roots, reunited with the producer behind her earlier folk triumphs, Jim Rooney. Taking its title from Truman Capote's first novel, Other Voices, Other Rooms is a gentle but whip-smart anthology of excellent songs from acknowledged masters (Bob Dylan, Tom Paxton, John Prine, Townes Van Zandt, Woody Guthrie, the Carter Family, the Weavers, Gordon Lightfoot) and lesser-known but hardly less-skilled writers including Kate Wolf, Frank Christian and Vince Bell. Griffith's clear-eyed vocals and unswerving intelligence are well served by members of her own band, augmented by vocal cameos from a roomful of fellow folk veterans including Prine, Arlo Guthrie, the Indigo Girls and John Gorka, among others. --Sam Sutherland

Good Cover Versions Album Shock!5
When an artist decides to put out an album of cover versions the alarm bells usually start to ring. Well you can switch off the alarm here. Quite apart from the fact that many of the songs aren't too familiar, Nanci manages to add something to those you do know. At the familiar end we have songs by artists including Dylan, Ralph McTell, Tom Paxton, Woody Guthrie & John Prine. Dylan even plays harmonica on his own Boots of Spanish Leather. But there are less familiar names - say GP Cook and Ralph Roland, who wrote Are You Tired Of Me Darling in 1877. The strength of the album is the real love of the songs you can feel coming through. Nanci is enjoying herself here - and she has a strong supporting cast too. The list of credits includes Emmylou Harris, Iris DeMent, Arlo Guthrie, John Prine, Chet Atkins and the Indigo Girls. So give this a listen - and consider investigating some of the artists that Nanci has introduced you to here. I have already checked a few of them out and Kate Wolf (Across the Great Divide) and Townes Van Zandt (Tecumseh Valley)are a good place to start. Nanci even wrote Ford Econoline about Kate Wolf. So investigate soon!

Perfection - a stellar album5
This is the most perfect album of covers you could hope to buy. This is so perfect that it brings tears of joy to my eyes (now that's rare). In act, it is a perfect album!
This is Nanci at her absolute best. The choice of songs is wonderful. My particular favourite? - all 17! Her choice of, and the singing by the harmony vocalists - Iris Dement, Emmylou Harris and John Prine, amongst others - is sensational; bearing in mind Nanci is singing at her most beautiful, this is faultless.

My collection of Nanci's music is rising quickly, but she will need to go some, to beat this beauty.

Now where's the remote - I need to hit the Repeat button....
