Editorial Reviews
CD Description
Dream Theater's speciality is atmospheric metal, at times heavy, at times sinister, with a sharp techno edge. "New Millennium", the disc's opening cut, defines the sound: ringing guitars, a driving beat, start-stop dynamics and rolling drum crescendos. There's a bit of a Rush influence at work here, as well as ELP and even some Metallica. "Hollow Years" is a quieter track, replete with gentle acoustic guitar, soothing vocals and an inspirational theme about the lifting of old curses and the possibility for redemption. Lead singer James LaBrie has a slightly nasal, but otherwise pleasing modern pop/metal vocal attack, which he exercises with passion throughout. If you like your metal melodic and even, at times, introspective, you should enjoy a visit to this Dream Theater.
Customer Reviews
No inspiration, No enthusiasm, The worst DT album
I bought this CD based on what I`ve read in the reviews. And what a disappointment!!! nothing that reminds me of Awake, Metropolis or Images. No inspiration, No enthusiasm, just like the record company forced them to do the yearly album, so they came to `One more day at the office`.
Ridiculous words (and I don`t expect them to be Jim Morrison), and the music ... Like ELP at their worst ... Bombastic with no inspiration and no enthusiasm (I wrote it before, didn`t I?).
Save your money, buy something else from DT, anything else but not this CD.
I gave them 2 stars just because they are DT.
A close shave.
This was nearly the last DT release - apparently they considered calling it a day during the recording sessions.
It is a bit patchy, the band wrote a song with Desmond Child aiming for the "hit", and the album doesn't have the cohesive feel of the rest of DT's catalogue .
But it still has some great songs on it, and one number that could have fitted onto MTV (Take Away My Pain)is a superb rock ballad IMHO.
Plus some of the instrumental sections are just phenomenal.
Fans should own this.
Progresive Rock come AOR - Not DT at there Ultimate.
Dream Theater are renowened for there unbeleivable musical ability. With there explosive and sometimes heavy playing, intertwining into a frenzy of complex songs. This album takes a somewhat different route. Instead they have gone for the mainstream approach, mixing typical AOR with Progressive Metal elements. Some of which works extremely well. Highlights on the album have to be the gorgeous 'Hollow Years', the headbanging 'Peruvian Skies', the Funky 'Lines in the Sand' and the electric 'New Millenium'. Unfortunatley the album didn't break them into the mainstream limelight as obviosly intended. Although this is probably just as well as they should stick to what there best at - Progressive Metal. Although its most definatly an Album I keep going back to, other DT fans may not agree. Mixed feelings on this Album but still a solid and respectable effort.
