CD Description
When hip-hop/R&B quartet En Vogue appeared on the scene in 1990 with BORN TO SING, it was clear that they were a force to be reckoned with. Carefully assembled by producers ThomasMcElroy and Denzil Foster, En Vogue blended girl-group sasswith soul, funk, pop smarts, and a sophisticated sense of style and edge. The harmonies of the three vocalists gave a cool, glossy edge to all their material, and that key element--along with the other hallmarks of their style--is clearly apparent on this fine debut.
A number of singles from thealbum hit the pop and R&B charts, including the smoothly grooving "Hold On" and the vocal-rotating "Lies", both of which made it to the pop charts, while "Don't Go" and "You Don'tHave to Worry" were R&B hits. En Vogue would ratchet up their popularity even more with their follow-up FUNKY DIVAS, but BORN TO SING was a strong opening salvo from one of the most successful girl groups of the '90s.

Funky divas impressive debut
This is the album that started it all for the 90's premier all-girl singing group and it still sounds great today. The tight harmonies and powerful lead vocals knock spots off current female acts Destiny's Child and TLC.
The girls handle upbeat material and slower songs with equal aplomb and never fail to sound classy. My only complaint is the rapping sounds dated (it was made over a decade ago!) but songs such as 'Hold On' and 'Don't Go' simply don't date. The suprising thing is how little current popular R'n'B production techniques by the likes of Rodney Jerkins et al are missed. A classic which transends time.
A must for all R&B fans!
PARTY- Not a song but an intro into a great album.STRANGE- This dancy-pop tune is just fine; even if the rapping does sound dated!LIES- The follow-up single to "HOLD ON" mixes R&B, Hip Hop & Soul; I just love it.BOOGIE WOOGIE BUGLE BOY- This 50-second long interlude is rather pointless.HOLD ON- You'll know this one! Sounding as great in the year 2000 as it did in 1990.PART OF ME- This slow and laid back tune shows off thir voices to the full where they take turns at lead vocals.YOU DON'T HAVE TO WORRY- This loud club-style track will have you up on the dancefloor!TIME GOES ON- Another nice dancy choon but the tick-tocking does become rather annoying chaps.JUST CAN'T STAY AWAY- This Traditional-style cover version brings tears to my eyes.DON'T GO- One of my favourite songs, it will soon have you ooh-oohing!LUV LINES- My least favourite track, it just sounds dated chaps!WAITIN' ON YOU- This "Lisa Stansfield" style ballad seems out of place on the LP, it's good though.BUY IT!
